Brief 4 - Childline - Research

Use Lighting

Lighting is a very important factor in creating any mood and directing a story.
Natural lighting.
Daylight, overcast light, or sunset.
Lighting conditions that allow for high contrasts.
Night and gloom always create a feeling of danger and horror.

Real Life

Use your own experience when depicting emotions.
How did it make you feel?
If you could personify and create a character based on that emotion, how would it look?

Words

A mind map is a graphical diagram of related thoughts and words about a subject.
Exhaust all possibilities, exploring everything

Story

Story is the overall idea or concept of the piece.
Really think about elements that make your audience curious as to what’s going on and invite them in to explore.
What’s in the box? Who’s around the corner? What story happened to get us to this scene?

Narrative

Nostalgia is a very sentimental and wistful feeling linked with personal experiences.
Very different for each person.
There are certain narratives that I think everyone can relate to.

Colours

Achromatic is the lack of saturation on those colours you’ve chosen, which can be used to make a more emotional scene. This image will have a slightly desaturated complementary palette to help reflect the feeling of despair

Using illustrations to elicit emotions

  • Custom illustrations can be especially impactful.
  • Unique ability to communicate content.
  • Bring immediate warmth and humanity.
  • Feels more personal.
Lotta Niemenen

  • The use of illustrations enhances your experience by breaking up the wall of text listings you would otherwise be faced with.
  • The organic texture and warm colors of the illustrations inject the app with humanity.
  • Imagery is powerful when it means something or has some personality.
  • They were not just decoration around the content; they themselves were content.

Quentin Vijoux - Intercom

  • The graphics’ loose, whimsical style is memorable and endearing. Anthropomorphic giraffes and rhinos on a website promoting customer service tools are certainly a unique surprise.
  • The pictures demand your attention.
  • We see a story unfold in the image below, with a beginning, middle and end.
  • The whimsical drawings make a perfect first impression

Pow Wow

  • When a mascot is well designed and carefully chosen, it can go a long way to communicating very quickly the core of what a company is.
  • Without a word, you can start to see how pow wow works within your existing schedule.
  • It creates a genuine emotional connection because it is designed not just with usability and functionality in mind, but also with a sense of the purpose it serves on a human level and how it makes life better.
Refrigerator Refresh

  • We do connect to images that mean something, that are relevant and that tell a story.
  • Animation can guide a user’s attention and communicate an idea instantly.
  • Designing with emotional connection in mind is becoming a necessity.
