Brief 3 - JB Springs - Initial Idea 2

The designs below were inspired by research into the maths and physics of springs and engineering, looking at forces and energy which then led to the theory of Hooke's Law. Therefore the character and avatar designs relate explicitly to this, taking the word 'Hooke' literally and producing a character in the shape and form of a hook. Which means that it relates to both learning and energy theories and also springs and JB Springs as a company itself.

Hooke’s Law

  • Law of mechanics and physics by Robert Hooke
  • Theory of Elasticity
  • Extension of a spring is proportional to the load applied to it.
  • Materials obey this law as long as the load does not exceed the material’s elastic limit.
  • The length of a spring always changes by the same amount when it is pushed or pulled.
  • F=kx
  • F is how much push or pull is on the spring
  • k is a constant the stiffness of the spring.
  • x is how far the spring was pushed or pulled.
  • When x=0 the spring is at the equilibrium position.
  • Ressort Spiral - the core of many mechanical clocks.
Although this time the difference in the design is the fact tat it has taken a more hand drawn approach, which may look friendlier and contrast to the rigid structures used in spring engineering. It means that the topic is more approachable and relatable, children may be more likely to engage with the character as well.
