Below shows pictures looking at the previous design and artwork for the event in the previous year. As this is only the second time the event is running, there weren’t multiple designs to look back on as a form of research or inspiration. Last year’s branding, uses predominantly a serif typeface to approach the design and the event in a more formal light. Using a quite neutral, natural colour scheme again to set the tone of the dress code and type of celebration. The design has a focus on type rather than imagery, illustrations or photography.
The photographs taken at the previous Summer Ball event, looking at the decorations, lights and colours used. The decoration and overall atmosphere to the event didn’t correlate to the promotional design, therefore with this year’s brief the design aims to represent the personality and feeling of the ball, the venue and the people attending.
The venue itself Left Bank in Leeds is a multidisciplinary arts venue set in a former church designed in a late gothic style. The building itself has a lot of geometric shapes and interesting formations within it, which is where the inspiration came from to use vector illustrations based mainly around abstract and geometric shapes, as well as the use of Futura.
