The design has been experimented on what stock it is printed on to try and achieve the best and most appropriate aesthetic which is relatable to both the target audience and also the cheap, affordable concept of production when printing the publication. The stocks that have been experimented with and analysed for appropriation are:
- Newsprint
- Plain A4 white Paper
- Bulky Newsprint
- White Card
These were the cheapest and most affordable stocks available to print the publication, first of all the plain white stock printer paper, wasn't very durable and couldn't last well when being transported and flicked through. It also made the publication look cheap and not well produced or though through. Also when thinking of the audience they would probably want to pass it around, discuss and show between the fanbase and this paper wouldn't last.
Second stock was standard newsprint, however again this was too thin and not very tactile, similar ideas to the previous paper, although the publication needs to be produced cheaply, it doesn't necessarily need to look cheap, in fact it needs to look well thought out, otherwise the target audience may see it as a throw away item.
To try and make the publication more durable and of higher quality white card was used, however this meant the paper and pages were too thick and it was hard to bind it together, especially with the chosen binding method of staples.
Finally bulky newsprint was the perfect combination of the two, therefore it wasn't too thin and wasn't too thick, it also is much more durable for example the book can stand up on it's own. The pages feel and look much more high end and therefore the target audience of young males are more likely to keep and look after the publication. Also by accident the bulky newsprint actually has slightly different textures and colouring on each side of the paper, therefore when flicking through the publication it looks and feels as though different stocks have been used. This was originally art of the concept which hints to the different layers and beats within hip hop music, aswell as the dimensions of the publication.
