When evaluating the design of the publication, starting with what went well was the overall final design the use of type is very strong and communicates the idea of artist's lyrics well which obviously communicates the content and the idea oh underground hip hop well. The style of the design, the printing, binding and stock choices all turned out well and went as planned and each was carefully considered as to which best communicated the content. In feedback it was sad that the type works well as especially to the target audience, as it condenses and displays the most important information in an interesting way, which will encourage them to read it. Many people described the use of type as 'edgy, unique and interesting', which is what the publication was trying to communicate to the audience and also the artists within he publication. The design is successful in communicating the content as when asked who the target audience was feedback was very positive with the majority saying young adults, students and those interested in underground hip hop music therefore the design is successful within this area and the audiences' take on the design. Also the use of the black letter contrasting the serif type as it communicates the feel and style, history of underground hip hop.
Improvements or disagreements from feedback was that the use of just type was too dry and the target audience would want pictures to look at and relate to the artists. However on one hand the client which the content came from gave poor quality and images and also at a late date, therefore the design was created from what was available. When evaluating this it turned out for the best as the use of just type and discarding the images meant that there was a stronger concept, which in turn made the publication stronger and concrete. Other feedback was that the product looked 'cheap', the reason why the publication isn't perfect is that it needs to be able to be produced quickly and efficiently due to the nature of zines and the context of where it would be given out.
In conclusion the problems that occurred with the content from the client actually restricted the design and content which in turn turned out for the better, as it meant a unique and exclusive publication like nothing else already out there, with a strong concept was designed as a result. It also meant that as a designer it was outside of the comfort zone, which meant something different was designed rather than all designs looking similar. also the design of a zine showed that to create a functional publication it doesn’t need to be professional printed or bound, it can still look professional when done yourself. Overall although there was an apprehensive approach to begin with, what was created a a result was very different in both style and design, as a result a fresh and very different piece of graphic design has been created which wouldn’t have happened otherwise.
