Tipped-in Pages
This publication has used tipped-in pages throughout the book, using different thickness stocks and stocks of different colours. The stocks have been used at different points throughout the publication. The different stocks correspond and have been changed to fit the most appropriate form for the information and content on the different pages throughout the book.
Laser/Die Cutting
Matte Finish
This publication cover uses a matte finis, rather than varnish or glossy. This stock means the colours become more subdued and not as sharp, it gives the publication a more casual approach and may be less expensive.
Tip-on Page
This publication uses a different stock which wraps around the publication and holds it together. Which again, makes it interactive for the reader, they have to pysically remove it in order to read the book. It also gives the book an identity and without it, the book would have an unknown message or title.
Laminate
This publication has used a laminate or varnish high gloss finish. This finish is much more durable, it is liquid resistant and more resistant to damage and marks. Therefore it is most often used in higher end publications, it would probably bring up the cost of production as well.
Embossing/Debossing
Both foil and embossing has been used here, it adds an extra dimension and layer to the book and the foil blocking on top of this makes it stand out alone on the cover. It also mirrors the innovative and fresh work that the London Studio has included within the book.
This publication has used embossing on the title and also on the illustrations on the front cover. The letters and illustrations that have been embossed have also been laminated or varnished, as they are very high gloss compared to the rest of the front cover.
The D&AD50 publication has used debossing underneath on the front cover, then an extra layer of laminate has been placed over the top as well.
Foil-Blocking
Both of these publication use foil blocking, the first has been used in the ornamentation on the front cover, as a background and the text has been overlayed over the top. The Vogue magazine has used foil blocking for the text as part of the header, as well as the rest of the publication having a high gloss varnish.
