Attending a small crit, there was a lot of feedback on the design concept and ideas so far, also ideas of what else to look at to inform more different ideas and how to relate the design to the content better.
One source of feedback was that maybe only reference the synthesiser subtly, so the colours and grid become invisible. Therefore the design can focus more on the content looking at more contemporary designs.
For layout ideas, looking at more different album covers, such as mix tapes. Other things to look at which may help to inform design decisions was to watch 'The Defiant Ones', a documentary about hip hop but with amore political and social stance.
Another idea to look at was fanzines, and look more into the punk movement as these ideas coincide together. Such as Frank Ocean's publication of Boys Don't Cry, which takes a very contemporary and abstract approach to the design.
Therefore maybe the basis of colours, dimensions and grid could come from the synthesiser, however the type layout, images is informed by the content and how the content can be shown in a very different and contemporary way. This way the design mixes uncommercialised and the roots of hip hop , with new, contemporary and innovative ideas together.

Look more into the underground culture of anonymous fly posters, and how to reflect this within the design.
How hip hop artists communicate, look into this further, through words and music, breaks and layering, maybe reflect this within the type layout.
Ideas from this crit to develop:
Graffiti tags, use this to create anonymity of the artists and their tags.
Use the ideas of punk zines which layout the type in a more exciting and contemporary way, similar to Brick Magazine which has previously been looked at.
Look at other zines and how they take a more DIY approach.
